Saddam Hussein’s Georgian Personal Advisor
A-83-year-old pilot Darwin Rukhadze from Georgia used to serve as a personal advisor of Saddam Hussein, the president of Iraq. In the Soviet Union, he would transport nuclear bombs. Darwin was working for the three former presidents of Georgia.

Pilot training in Iraq

In 1967, when the experienced pilot was dead in Iraq, Darwin was offered to serve as a pilot of the Iraqi air force. There was a conflict between Israel and the union of Arabian countries at that time.
Darwin decided to take his family with him. When he went to Iraq, his daughter was 6 and his son was in the sixth grade at school. He had to train the Iraqi pilots. There were 54 people in his group.

The first meeting with Saddam Hussein was during his training. Saddam Hussein went to check on his cousin who was undergoing a pilot training with Darwin. At that time, Saddam Hussein was in the opposition. After the training, the Georgian pilot was living in Budapest for 5 years. Then he became the head of the Aviation Security in the South Caucasus.

When Saddam Hussein led a coup in Iraq, Darwin had to arrive in Iraq. As the country was in war with Iran, Darwin was not allowed to take his family with him and he went alone to the country. He was appointed as an advisor of the captain of the Aviation Security in Iraq.

Being a personal advisor of Saddam Hussain

One day, the Georgian pilot was asked about if the air force could bomb Tehran. He knew the operation was possible but he hesitated to express his opinion. When the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev heard about the bombing, he said it was possible if Iraq agreed. The information was to be brought to the president Saddam Hussein by the Georgina pilot.

Darwin met the Iraq president at 02:00 a.m. Saddam Hussein recalled the first meeting with Darwin and promised him to organize a meeting for Darwin with her wife. At the end of the conversation, Darwin told the president that Brezhnev agreed on bombing the city. Saddam Hussein asked for his advice and steps they should take before starting the operation.

Darwin Rukhadze remembers the presidency of Saddam Hussein in Iraq. The president distributed “Toyota” cars to the population. He gave them lands for free. Saddam Hussein warned the people to take care of the lands, grow plants and gather the harvest. At first, people liked the president but then he turned into a dictator.

Working with the presidents of Georgia

His career in Georgia goes back to the presidency of Zviad Gamsakhurdia, the first president of Georgia. He served as a secretary of the caption of the interior armed forces in Georgia. Unfortunately, he did not have a face-to-face conversation with the president but he was attending ministerial meetings in the parliament bunker.

As for Eduard Shevardnadze, the second president of Georgia, Darwin was used to be his personal pilot. One day, Eduard asked him to fly to Kakheti. The president wanted to see the rich wheat harvest with his own eyes. Later, people started to complain about the poor quality of bread which in their opinion, was caused by imported wheat. The information spread in the media that Shevardnadze’s relative owned the business of bread production in Georgia. It was said that Eduard Shevardnadze was defending his relative and covering the truth. Darwin was wondering where the rich harvest he had seen in Kakheti disappeared.

After the rose revolution, he was also serving as a pilot of the third president Mikheil Saakashvili. The president used to sit next to the pilot. He was giving questions about the social-economic situation in Georgia and Darwin’s attitude towards Saakashvili’s presidency.
