How is Georgia preparing for Eurovision Song Contest?
Eurovision Song Contest is one of the largest of its kind and around 300 million spectators are getting ready to watch the show.
74 countries are included in the contest, but only 55 participate regularly. Among them is Georgia.

Georgians are preparing for the contest very hard. This year Georgian Public Broadcaster has launched a project called Georgia’s Star. The winner of the project will represent the country at the Eurovision Song Contest.

Representative of the European Broadcasting Union’s media management
committee and one of the judges Tiko Berdzenishvili says that it is a common method in other countries to choose the best candidate for contest from other song projects. “This is the right direction” – she says. It is like to kill two birds with one stone – “On one hand we’ve launched a TV mega project, on the other hand we will choose the best candidate for Eurovision Song Contest”.

There is small innovation as well – viewers now will be able to vote for their preferred candidates via Facebook Messenger. New application was created that enables viewers to vote in every 12 hours via Messenger.

“Georgia’s Star was already viewed 2 million times in web” – says Tiko Berdzenishvili, “Project Georgia’s Star was launched on the 5th of January. The final show will be held on the 2nd of March. We will know about the winner and the victor song on the 10th of March”.

Tiko says that almost all of the contenders are professionals and it is hard to distinguish any of them.

Another judge in the project is Natia Todua, winner of the The Voice of Germany 2018. She says that it was not easy to get used to the post of judge, but now she feels better. Past experience in The Voice of Germany helped her very much. When judges enjoyed the song, they showed serious support. “They would stand up and dance on place” – says Natia.

“It is very important that after the project, winner has a chance to proceed their career in music. This did not happen in the past in Georgia. The winner would only get a car or a flat but there were no future in music for them, no concerts, no tours. In this case, the winner has an open road to the Eurovision stage – this is very important” – says Natia Todua.

Natia currently lives in Germany and is working on her new album. Nevertheless, she flies back to Georgia for two days every week to take part in the Georgia’s Star.
