Fathers reading fairy-tales to their kids in Kharagauli kindergartens
Children in Kharagauli (a district in Imereti, west Georgia) kindergartens have recently been informed about great news: their fathers are going to be the ones who will be reading fairy-tales for them. The project “Daddy, read me a fairy tale” has been launched since the beginning of February. The project will entail fathers’ active engagement in the learning and upbringing process of the Kharagauli kindergartens.

There is a tendency in Georgia that fairy-tales are usually read to children by their mothers.
Men are mostly regarded as the main breadwinners resulting in considerably low participation in their children’s upbringing process. “Daddy read me a fairy tale” aims to improve the inequality in that regard. The project is planned to be expanded with other similar activities in the future.

The kids seem to be happy with the initiative. They are encouraged to ask questions to their fathers about a fairy tale and its characters. Some of the fathers even created paintings with the kids based on fairy-tales.

It is worth mentioning that in recent years there have been various projects and activities performed in order to raise awareness about the importance of father’s engagement in children’s learning and upbringing process.

In 2016, an interesting campaign was launched in Georgia. It was organized by the United Nations Joint Program for Gender Equality with the help of the Government of Sweden and UNFPA Georgia named “Mencare”.

A survey, carried out in Georgia in 2013 by UNFPA shows that roles and relationships are not equally distributed between men and women. Due to inequitable stereotypes, Georgian men hesitate to take full responsibility to be equitable fathers, partners, husbands, and family members.

The campaign implemented popular TV programs, such as “Daddy, read me a book” and “A Letter to a child” (the blog for fathers to voice the importance of men’s care) contributing to the promotion of men’s engagement as fathers. Various Georgian celebrities, actors, basketball players, musicians, and TV presenters joined the campaign. They try to break stereotypes about what is defined as men’s or women’s responsibility.
