A 25-year Japanese student enchanted by the Georgian language
A 25-year old Ryosei Suginaka is a student from Japan. He has been living in Georgia for 2 years and already speaks Georgian fluently. Ryosei studied International Relations and the Spanish language in Kyoto, Japan. Enchanted by the Georgian language and alphabet, the Japanese decided to take a break and visit Georgia.

Ryosei encountered a Georgian grammar book in a library compiled by one of the Japanese linguists. Reading through the book, he was impressed with the beauty of Georgian letters and
decided to study the language thoroughly. Soon Ryosei arrived in Georgia, started learning the language through self-study and the communication with Georgian friends.

“At first, I could not understand a single word in Georgia. I was a little bit afraid of being unable to study the language. Apart from some pleasant and soft sounds, there are the laryngeal and guttural sounds in the language that are difficult to articulate. Therefore, I thought the learning process would painful. But that has never happened. When I was studying grammar, I liked the phonetics of the Georgian language very much. I had a great motivation to study the language and that's why I found it easier to fulfill my goal.”

He finds Georgian dishes very delicious, especially Khinkali, Adjarian Khachapuri, and Georgian wine. Suginaka is delighted by the wonderful hospitality culture of the local people. The things that he finds uncomfortable in Georgia are unsafe traffic and frequent fights.

“It is sad that Georgia remains unknown to the most Japanese people to this day. The country is distinguished by its culture, beauty and historical heritage and I want to introduce them to the Japanese. Besides, I really want Georgians to learn the Japanese language. During my stay in Georgia, I have been doing my best to encourage Georgians to do so."

Currently, Ryosei Suginaka teaches the Japanese language at the Japanese language and culture center in Tbilisi, Georgia.
