The Guardian: How Jack Shepherd tried to elude British justice in Tbilisi
The Guardian has recently published an article about Jack Shepherd “How Jack Shepherd tried to elude British justice in Tbilisi”. Jack Shepherd, 31, was convicted in his absence last July of the manslaughter by gross negligence of Charlotte Brown, 24, and sentenced to six years in jail. He went on the run after the incident and was detained in Tbilisi, Georgia. Jack Shepherd arrived at the Vake-Saburtalo Police Division accompanied by his lawyer on January 23, 2019 and handed himself in
to police.

According to the article, Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia is not only a great place for skiing, swimming, hiking, Black Se beaches and traditional cuisine but it is also a perfect place to disappear. When Shepherd arrived in Georgia, he probably looked like a tourist. For 20 months he managed to elude British justice. In Georgia, he went by the name Jack Grant and Locals had no idea he was a fugitive.

“It was easy. He didn’t need an office. Everything was done online,” Nino Vardzelashvili, a journalist with Georgia’s main Rustaveli-2 channel, said. Jack Shepherd travelled across Georgia, visited bars and restaurants, attended lectures and seminars in Tbilisi.

The article also reads that Shepherd’s wife said she had told police last year that her husband had fled to Georgia but detectives turned out to be slow to react. Shepherd spent his last weeks in Georgia in the city jail. Shepherd shared the cell with two other inmates, furnished with a desk, TV and books. He arrived in London by plane on Wednesday evening, ahead of an appearance at the Old Bailey on Thursday.
