Tbilisi on Fashion World Map
Over 70 fashion designers have presented their collections at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Tbilisi 2019. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Tbilisi is Georgia’s premier fashion event offering an international platform for designers from the region. The event was attended by the representatives of the World’s top fashion houses namely Net-a-Porter, Printemps Paris, Liberty London, Moda Operandi, etc.

Georgian Journal will introduce its readers to the stories of some of the Georgian brands.

MATURELLI is a Georgian brand established by the Georgian designer Maria Matureli.
Although her father and grandfather are designers, Maria had never thought about becoming the one. She started by taking photos for different magazines and sewing dresses for her personal photo album. After adding the photos to social media, people got interested in her clothes.

According to Maria, she expresses her philosophy through clothes. One of the major things, she is concerned about is environmental pollution. Her brand is the only Georgian one which follows Circular Fashion in order to reduce the negative effect on nature. Maria’s first collection will be made of seemingly useless fabrics and the remnants.

Aka Prodiashvili is another successful designer from Georgia. Aka has met numerous obstacles in his life but he always tries to look at them as life lessons. Every disappointment has led him to the new stage of his life. Aka has been painting, photographing, doing make-ups and creating clothes and accessories since his childhood. According to the designer, his goal is to outdo himself because it is the only obstacle standing before him.

Aka has always been protesting against Homophobia in Georgia. Apart from attending public demonstrations against the problem, he is trying to express his protest through his clothes.

Nemsen is a brand by the Georgian designer Guga Nemsadze. Inspired by the well-dressed models on Fashion TV, he was driven to create beautiful clothes on his own. Later he started his career at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts and then continued his studies in London. After gaining the relevant experience abroad, he decided to come back and establish his own brand in Georgia. Guga tries to create clothes that would match both sporty and classical style.

Janelidze Bags is a Georgian bag line by Nata Janelidze. Her bags are very popular in Russia and Europe. Nata was sewing her own clothes even in her school years. She had always wanted to create original bags but she couldn’t find a person who would have turned her designs into reality. Later she was introduced to somebody who got interested in her ideas and decided to work together.

According to Nata, the main challenge she faces is the fact that Georgia lacks quality fabrics and she has to purchase them from foreign countries.
