Rustavi 2 TV Anchor Insults Putin, Government calls it a provocation
On July 7, Giorgi Gabunia, anchor of the PS news program on Rustavi 2 TV, used obscene terms against Russian President Vladimir Putin. Gabunia cursed Vladimir Putin. After the program, anchors of Weekly Accents, Nika Gvaramia and Eka Kvesitadze, apologized for the statement of Giorgi Gabunia.

Later, a rally was held in front of the Rustavi 2 building. Demonstrators demanded the launch of an investigation into the statement of Giorgi Gabunia, as well as dismissal of Nika Gvaramia and Giorgi Gabunia.
Later, Director General of the TV Company, Nika Gvaramia, made a special statement and said that the channel would suspend broadcasting because the safety of journalists was not protected. Rustavi 2 has already resumed broadcasting.

President, PM, and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia respond

"This is not patriotism. The interests of the country cannot be protected with aggression, destabilization, and unrest. We have a peaceful policy, our perspective in Europe and our strength is stability. Inciting confrontation and tension in the region by us is inadmissible! This is either revenge or a provocation aimed at starting a new war? Anyway, this is an action against the country! He did what Georgia has never done! This literally damages our state interests!"- reads the statement."This is not patriotism. The interests of the country cannot be protected with aggression, destabilization, and unrest. This is either revenge or a provocation aimed at starting a new war? Anyway, this is an action against the country! He did what Georgia has never done! This literally damages our state interests!"- reads the statement released by the President of Georgia Salome Zourabichvili.

“What the Georgian society has witnessed today on Rustavi 2 is categorically unacceptable! I profoundly categorize this television message as a provocation and as that of containing the greatest threat against peace and security of Georgia.

I am confident that every citizen and friend of Georgia will isolate themselves from such a provocation. Every sensible person will view this fact as a manifestation of a politically utterly dangerous provocation.

It is a war of provocateurs against their homeland, a dirty and outrageous game putting the security of the state and citizens at stake,” stated Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia condemned the expressions used by TV Company Rustavi 2. According to them, it had nothing in common with the freedom of speech and represented a provocation that aimed at complicating the already tense relationship between Georgia and Russia.

The Foreign Ministry called on the international community and all international organizations working on the press freedom to properly assess the actions of the TV channel and the journalist, who bluntly ignored the international professional norms and standards.
