In the Wake of Georgia’s National Tragedy
17 November, 2011

Starting from the 9th of April, the KGB went into a full swing of its regular activity. KGB was gradually slipping from under Gorbachev’s control to put forward the activity, described as ‘the worse the better’. The year of 1990 was a year of a serious stagnation in the Soviet Union. Gorbachev declared himself the president of the USSR. Shevardnadze refused from the post of a vice-president. The reputation of the Soviet Army was badly damaged. The national-liberation movement was

gathering tremendous momentum in every soviet republic. Professor Simon Maskharashvili has more.

GJ – What was the reaction like in the audience?

SM – Divided! For example, Eduard Shevardnadze interjected with his angry comment and interrupted Katushev, leaving the congress hall (if I knew the contents of Katushev’s Conclusion, Shevardnadze – more so). Gorbachev demonstrated solidarity with Shevardnadze, leaving the hall too. Going through Katushev’s corroborating material never took place – the reading of the Conclusion was busted. The main target was reached – the Soviet Army was discredited. It now looked sadistic, lying, and cruel – not recognizing the brutality of the perpetrated crime. And its deplorable behavior was disparaged by the political elite of the Soviet Union, which is well into the process of Perestroika and democratic development of the country. It was the communist elite’s intention to let the world know all about the atrocious act committed by the Soviet Army. At that time, in Europe, the anti-soviet movement and manifestations had started. The soviet communist party and the Russian occupation of the Eastern Europe became the target of harsh criticism. The units of the Soviet Army, stationed in Eastern Europe could not do anything in the newly-created situation because it was then operating with an apologetic attitude both inside and outside the Soviet Union. The commanders were unable to give any kind of (even well-founded) orders to the Army. In Romania for example, Ceausescu (the communist boss of long standing) and his wife were dragged out of the government house and killed violently in the streets of Bucharest without the soviet troops even made the slightest move in their defense. The anti-communist manifestations had started in the then East Germany. People started moving out from socialist Germany (GDR – German Democratic Republic) to West Germany. This was all followed by demolishing the infamous Berlin Wall, dividing Germany in two different countries.

GJ – Are you saying that the 9th of April of 1989 of Georgia was the last straw that finally ended the Evil Empire (term coined by President Reagan) – the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics)?

SM – Practically yes! Starting from the 9th of April, the KGB went into a full swing of its regular activity. KGB was gradually sliding from under Gorbachev’s control to put forward the activity, described as ‘the worse the better’. The year of 1990 was a year of serious stagnation in the Soviet Union. Gorbachev declared himself the president of the USSR. Shevardnadze refused from the post of vice-president. The reputation of the Soviet Army was badly damaged. The national-liberation movement was gathering tremendous momentum in every soviet republic.
