Masterminding the Attack

The assassination was organized by the Russian secret service – not otherwise. At one of the United Nations’ general assemblies, Georgia was urged to make an official request that the CIS armed forces be sent on its peace-keeping mission to conflict zones on the Georgian territory. Professor Simon Maskharashvili has more.
GJ – By the year of 1993, Georgia found itself in an extremely hard social, economic and political situation. Substantial part of Georgia’s territory – Apkhazeti (Abkhazia) and the

Tskhinvali Region (the so called South Ossetia) were occupied by Russia. The country’s economy was ruined and the state structures were paralyzed. Consequently, Georgia’s newly installed leader Eduard Shevardnadze was compelled to consent with Georgia’s accession to CIS – Commonwealth of Independent States (the newly and forcefully created association of the former soviet republics). How did the situation develop further?
S.M. – One of the biggest and the worst news was that somewhere on the verge of 1993 and 1994 the first President of Georgia Zviad Gamsakhurdia was assassinated who had lived in exile, sheltered in the woods of west Georgia.
GJ – The truth of his demise is unknown up until now. Nobody knows who had masterminded and executed the President’s murder...
S.M. – It is my strong personal belief that the assassination was organized by the Russian secret service – not otherwise. At one of the United Nations’ general assemblies, Georgia was urged to make an official request that the CIS armed forces be sent on its peace-keeping mission to conflict zones on the Georgian territory. Most importantly, on the key posts of the ministries of defense, state security and interior the cadres (Nadibaidze, Georgadze and Kviraia respectively), sent from Moscow were assigned. Being Georgians only in name, their mentality was purely Russian. They could not even operate in the Georgian language properly. This all meant that the members of the top brass were directly subordinated to Moscow and faithfully served Russia’s interests in Georgia. In the spring of 1994, notwithstanding Georgia’s clearly pro-western orientation, Shevardnadze signed an agreement according to which the Russian troops and military bases (including the Vaziani military base in the vicinity of Georgia’s capital city of Tbilisi) would stay on Georgia’s territory for another 25 years. The Georgian parliament though had never recognized that act, which was appreciated as a heroic patriotic step undertaken by the Georgian parliamentarians. That was the period of time when Georgia clearly ranked as Russia’s colony. This was egregious de facto occupation. To fully complete the de facto occupation, Russia masterminded an act of terrorism. This was a grandiose act of terrorism against the Shevardnadze rule and against Shevardnadze himself. The execution of the planned act was entrusted to the minister of state security of Georgia Igor Georgadze.
