and will see its greatest field of 32 countries line up, increasing the pool of world famous stars and global appeal of the event. * AFC increases number of teams for AFC Asian Cup finals
In order to give the opportunity for more Member Associations to be part of Asia’s flagship competition, the AFC Executive Committee on Wednesday decided to approve a proposal to increase the number of teams in the AFC Asian Cup from 16 to 24 from the 2019 edition on. Depending on the number of entries, Member Associations will be divided into eight groups in the preliminary stage. The eight group winners and four second best teams among all the eight groups will qualify for the FIFA World Cup final round of qualifiers and also the AFC Asian Cup finals. Presently, only ten teams battle it out in the final round of FIFA World Cup qualifiers. The next best 24 teams from the preliminary qualification round (24 teams) will compete for the remaining slots in the AFC Asian Cup finals in six groups of four teams each. The final round of FIFA World Cup qualifiers and AFC Asian Cup qualifiers will be separated.
* Bids for 2022 Commonwealth Games
In 2008, Nigeria signaled its intention to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games after its successful staging of the 8th All Africa Games. Nigeria gave the hint after due consultations with virtually all the National Olympic Committees of African countries and the 19 African nations in the Commonwealth Games’ Movement. The idea was to garner bloc support for the country because in terms of numbers, Africa has the largest number of countries in the Movement. Europe only has three countries, Asia has eight countries, the Americas and the Caribbean have 13 countries, while the Pacific has 11 countries.
* Montenegro qualifies in extremis for Super Final
The team of Montenegro is the last European qualifier for the Super Final of the FINA Men’s Water Polo World League 2014 after claiming a hard-fought, 8-10 victory over Germany on 15 April. The Montenegrins took the lead in the third quarter, securing the win and thus a Super Final berth in the last eight minutes. In other games action, Serbia remained unchallenged, crushing Russia 14-7 for a total 12 points. In Group B, 2012 Olympic champions Croatia bounced back from a disappointing World League campaign stunning the reigning World champions Hungary 10-9 after penalty shootouts in Pecs.
