* Outstanding success of Georgian Judo wrestlers
For the third time in succession, Georgian Judo wrestlers won the title of European champions. At the European Judo championship, which took place in France, the Georgian athletes defeated the Russian national team with a score of 4 to 1 in the finals of the group tournament. In the personal competition, Avtandil Chrikashvili and Varlam Liparteliani became European Champions, while Amiran Papinashvili and Adam Okruashvili gained silver medals. Avtandil Chrikashvili’s judo hold was
recognized as the best throw of the championship. The championship revealed the best national team and the best coach of 2013. The Georgian team and the Georgian coach Irakli Uznadze were awarded these titles. The members of the National Judo team were welcomed at the airport by their fans and representatives of the Judo Federation and the Ministry of Sports.
* Kuznetsov stuns fans in Moscow
The local delegation delivered powerful performances in Moscow during the fourth stop of the FINA/NVC Diving World Series on 2-4 May with at its helm 2013 World silver medalist Evgeny Kuznetsov taking the gold in the men’s 3m springboard with a final score of 542.30, ahead of Ukraine’s Illya Kvasha (second) and Jack Laugher from the UK (third).
* Petition against internet costs
Sports Journalists from more than 100 countries have signed a petition protesting against the internet fee imposed by the organizers of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. About 150 signatures were collected from journalists from 103 countries attending recently concluded 77th AIPS congress in Baku, Azerbaijan, who supported calls by AIPS to the organizers to reconsider the decision to charge internet fees for journalists covering the event from 23 July to 3 August. The organizers have insisted on charging journalists a service fee of £95 for wireless media internet and an inflated £265 for photographers, which must be paid in advance. Accredited journalists have already received invoices seeking payment for the internet services at the games.
* AIPS Congress in Baku closes in extraordinary spirit
With an extraordinary ceremony hosted at the Buta Palace in Baku the 77th AIPS (International Sports Press Association) Congress came to quite an end on Wednesday evening: Traditional dancers, Azeri folk singers and modern pop music combined with traditional Azeri food made the night one to remember for all those present.
