* Georgian Boxer in Nanjing-2014 Youth Games
Georgia will also have a competing boxer in the approaching Summer Youth Olympics. Giorgi Kharabadze (69 kg) showed the best result among the Georgian boxers in the world youth championship in Sofia, Bulgaria. To be licensed for Nanjing 2014, an athlete had to be among the first six contenders. Maximum three licenses were allotted to each country. Kharabadze won two battles and lost in the 1/8 finals from his Uzbek rival. It seemed
like the chance to go to Nanjing was lost, but fortune was on our side. The Ukrainian team won four licenses for Nanjing-2014 – one beyond the allotted national quota. Ukraine refused from participating in this particular weight category and as a result, the license was awarded to Giorgi Kharabadze.
* Tbilisi – host of many different sporting events
Tbilisi will be hosting the European Youth Olympic Festival of 2015. But another summer event is planned before that. Jean Grazia, First Vice President of the European Association of Athletics and Robert Emian, President of the Armenian Federation of Athletics met with Alexi Akhvlediani, President of the Georgian Athletics Federation and Chairman of the organizing committee of the 2015 Youth Olympic Games. They discussed the organizational and logistical issues of Tbilisi 2014, the European Athletics Youth Championship – although only of the Third League. The Championship will be held in Tbilisi on June 21 and 22 this year. About 700 athletes from 15 countries are supposed to take part in the event. The negotiators also touched upon the planned perpetrations for the upcoming European Youth Athletics Championship in 2016 in Tbilisi.
* Cadet European Championships-Qualification
The 2014 Cadet European Championships took place in Samokovo in Bulgaria, where Georgia obtained one more qualification for the YOG. At the continental championships quotas for Nanjing 2014 are gained by finalists. The quotas are limited to only two qualifications per country in each freestyle and Greco Roman wrestling. Even in the cases when the country has over two competitors (for instance Azerbaijan, four qualifications), the final selection of the two strongest wrestlers will be made by the coaching board. Regretfully, the events in Samokovo have not evolved in our favor and our freestyle wrestlers failed to succeed. Meki Simonia (76kg) was the only wrestler who got qualified for the YOG 2014 to be held in China. The Georgian defeated his German, Hungarian and Azerbaijani opponents in a row at the beginning acquiring in the final fight license for Nanjing YOG. We were very close to a second quota place, however Givi Macharashvili (100kg) lost the chance just 20 seconds before the end of the match. Macharashvili initially fought convincingly against his opponent from Moldova to get into the final, but by losing momentary concentration, he lost both the chance of getting into the final and qualifying for the YOG. The Georgian athletes in the Greco-Roman style started their competition on 10-11 May.
* Security will be enhanced at all sporting events in Georgia
In the next couple of years, Georgia is going to be the venue of numerous important international sporting events like the European Youth Olympic Festival (2015), the UEFA Super Cup Final (2015), the Handball Youth World Championship (2017), the European Weightlifting Championship (2015), and the European Youth Athletic Championship (2016). Georgia will certainly be hosting thousands of athletes, officials, journalists and supporters during these events and the issue of security naturally becomes very hot. A group of officials, representing relevant international sports organizations visited Georgia with this purpose and had talks with the GNOC Vice Presidents Berishvili and Salukvadze. They received strong assurances from them that security will be carried out at the highest possible level starting with the Tbilisi-2015.
