Tbilisi Marathon 2015 takes the Georgian capital by storm
Organized by Heidelberg Cement, the grand social project Tbilisi Marathon has been held for the fourth time. This year’s iteration has surprised onlookers and participants alike with many new features and a different format. Instead of Tbilisi Sea, the marathon’s route went through the city’s central districts. It started in the morning of October 25, personally opened by Tbilisi Mayor Davit Narmania.

The amount of runners has exceeded 2000, with over 300 being foreigners who arrived to Georgia specifically with
the purpose of participating. The list also included famous public figures, actors, politicians, etc.

This year’s marathon was split into two races, one 21 km long and the other 10. The latter was held in full adherence to international standards. Results were calculated using the internationally approved system “Official Timekeeping and Data Processing” by Mika Timing. The first place in the 21km run was geotv.getaken by Davit Kharazishvili, who covered the distance in 1 hour, 10 minutes and 3 seconds. The female winner of the same run was Valya Avagyan who made it in 1 hour, 37 minutes and 55 seconds. As for the 10km run, the male winner was Ervand Mkrtchyan, while the female winner was Tamar Gelashvili.

Tbilisi Marathon was held with support of Georgia’s Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, the German Embassy and Tbilisi City Hall. The purpose of the event was to promote a healthy lifestyle and social responsibility among the youth.

Following an already established tradition, the event was charitable in character, and money collected from registration of participants was doubled and donated towards expansion and improvement of the Disability Care Center in Rustavi.

It is also noteworthy that this year, Tbilisi Marathon has officially become a member of the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS), which means that it the first half marathon in the Caucasus to achieve international status.

See you at Tbilisi Marathon 2016!
