Georgian weightlifter becomes European champion, sets 2 records, wins 3 medals

The Junior & Under 23 Weightlifting Championship in the city of Eilat, Israel, ended with total Georgian triumph as the country earned 22 medals overall on December 10.

On the last day of the tournament, Georgian athletes received 11 medals. Among them was the Rio Olympics Champion, the winner or World and European championships and current world record holder, the heavyweight Lasha Talakhadze. This time he added more titles to his collection – Under-23 championship, three gold medals and two

Lasha was successful in all three attempts at snatch. At first he lifted 193 kilograms and then 200, eventually bettering the record held by Ruslan Albegov (195). At the third attempt however, he lifted 205, bettering his own new record again.

As for clean and jerk, Talakhadze used only two attempts. At first he lifted 222 kilograms and then 235. He eventually accumulated 440 kilograms and bettered the record held by Albegov by 5 kilograms.

On that same day, in 106 kilograms weight category, David Khetsuriani earned silver medal and Giorgi Chkheidze came third.

On the previous day, among women, Anastasia Gottfried won the gold medal.
