Nikoloz Basilashvili’s victory over top seed Dominic Thiem against all odds
10 February, 2017
Georgian tennis player Nikoloz Basilashvili has won another game at Sofia Open yesterday, defeating Austrian Dominic Thiem, who was the tournaments No.1 player and world’s No.8. Basilashvili’s victory was largely unexpected as he won 6:4, 6:4 against all odds and proceeded to the quarterfinals, where his rival will be Martin Kližan from Slovakia.

It is the second time that Basilashvili managed to defeat a player from the top ten, after winning against Tomas Berdych last year.

“I believe I played
very well and especially I was good at my opponent’s servings. I never lost concentration and now I am only thinking about the next game. It is a very special feeling when you defeat someone who is ranked in the top ten. This victory is one of the best in my career, if not the best of all. Martin Kližan is a very good player and it will be very difficult to play against him. But the victory against Thiem has increased my self-confidence,” Basilashvili said.

23-year-old Thiem said Basilashvili played at a very fast tempo and that he was unable to follow.

“I had no chances when he was serving and I think it should be my main concern. My rival played very well today but he was also a little bit lucky,” Thiem concluded.
