Georgian chess grandmaster’s triumph at World Chess Championship

Renowned Georgian chess player Nana Dzagnidze claimed the gold medal at World Chess Championship in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia hosted male and female players from 55 countries, among them 10 men and 11 women of world’s top players. The World Open and Women’s Blitz Chess Championships gathered together the best players throughout the world.

World No.1 Magnus Carlsen (Norway) reclaimed his supremacy as Champion of World Open Blitz Chess. In the Women’s Championship, Georgian mother-of-two Nana Dzagnidze fulfilled her
dream and earned the gold medal with her breathtaking performance.

Nana describes the victory at World Chess Championship as the best achievement in her whole 26 years chess career.

Georgian Journal asked Nana to elaborate on her great success, her impressions related with the championship and future plans:

-Could you elaborate on your past experiences in this field? Tell us about your previous tournaments and victories.

-I play chess from age of 5, so of course I have experienced many victories. I have been 4 times world youth chess champion, under 12 years, under 16,18,20.

Several times European youth chess champion. Winner women world Grand Prix.

Olympic champion with my Georgian team in 2008 in Dresden. Winner many of international tournaments.

For me especially successful was previous year, I became Europe women chess champion and end of the year my dream came true and I become world women chess champion!

-How would you describe World Chess Championship held in Saudi Arabia?

-Tournament was organized on a very high level I would say, as I know they are going to hold it this year too, so I hope I will get back.

-Share your emotions concerning your victory.

Of course it was very exciting. It is my best achievement in my whole 26 years chess career.

-What are your future plans? What is your goal for the year 2018?

I have a many more interesting and important tournaments this year, such as European women chess championship in April in Slovakia, there I should defend my title. World chess Olympiad in Batumi, Georgia. World women chess championship in classic chess in Khanty-Mansiysk Russia. And hopefully all of them will be as successful as Saudis blitz event for me.

Nana is the current European women's champion. She was a member of the gold medal-winning Georgian team in the Women's Chess Olympiad in 2008 and the Women's World Team Chess Championship in 2015.

Dzagnidze won the Girls under 12 section of the World Youth Chess Championships in 1999. She also won the gold medal at the World Girls under 20 Championship in 2003, scoring 2 points ahead of the field.

In September 2005 she took part in the sixth Lausanne Young Masters tournament, finishing seventh. Andrei Volokitin won the tournament.

At the Gibraltar Chess Festival, Dzagnidze won the prize for the best female player in 2009 and 2011.

In July 2010 she won in Jermuk the fourth leg of the FIDE Women's Grand Prix series, which was part of the Women's World Chess Championship cycle for 2011.

In 2017, she won the European Women's Championship in Riga. Winning the gold medal at World Chess Championship in Saudi Arabia is her latest great success at this stage.
