Georgian sumo wrestler Tochinoshin awarded with Medal of Honor in Japan
Georgian Sumo wrestler Levan Gorgadze, also known by his Japanese name Tochinoshin, who won historic Emperor’s Cup in Japan at the Grand Sumo Tournament which was held in January, has received a prestigious national honor award from his home country, Georgia.

President Giorgi Margvelashvili decided that Tochinoshin should be honored for being the first Georgian to win the championship and has awarded him with the prestigious Medal of Honor. Gorgadze has been awarded for promoting Georgia abroad.

Tochinoshin is the
3rd European in history, who has been able to win the most prestigious Sumo tournament in the world.

Tochinoshin won historic Emperor’s Cup in Japan

Georgia's ambassador to Japan, Levan Tsintsadze, handed the medal to the wrestler at a celebration party on Saturday in Tokyo.

Tochinoshin said he has had 12 years of hardship since he came to Japan. He expressed gratitude to the people of Georgia and Japan for their unwavering support, even after he was demoted due to an injury in 2013.

Over 100 people, including diplomats and people from the sports community, attended the celebration.

Tochinoshin is a professional sumo wrestler

Tochinoshin Tsuyoshi (born 13 October 1987 as Levan Gorgadze) is a professional sumo wrestler from the city of Mtskheta, Georgia. He is a member of the Kasugano stable. The sportsman made his professional debut in March 2006.

He is the 3rd European in history, who has been able to win the most prestigious Sumo tournament in the world

Levan reached the top makuuchi division just two years later in May 2008. His highest rank has been sekiwake. After a long hiatus due to injury, he began his comeback from the rank of makushita 55 in March 2014, logging four championships in a row in lower divisions on his way back to the top division in November 2014.

Tochinoshin has eight special prizes, five for Fighting Spirit, two for Technique, and one for Outstanding Performance, as well as two kinboshi or gold stars for defeating yokozuna. In January 2018 he took his first top-division yūshō (championship).
