Georgia to host 2023 Freestyle Ski and Snowboard World Championships
Georgia’s famous ski resorts of Bakuriani and Gudauri will host the 2023 Freestyle Ski and Snowboard World Championships. The information has already been made public by Georgian Government.

According to the representatives of Georgian Government Administration, the relevant decision was made by International Ski Federation (FIS) at the congress held in Greece.

Georgia’s willigness to become the host country of 2023 Freestyle Ski and Snowboard World Championships was announced by Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili during the meeting with FIS President Gian-Franco Kasper in St. Moritz in February 2017.

In April 2017, Georgian Ski Federation (GSF) officially put forward the country’s formal bid to host the World Championship, what was followed by the Head of Government hosting FIS Secretary General Sarah Lewis and her delegation in Georgia.

FIS Freestyle Skiing Coordinator Joseph Fitzgerald, together with the members of the delegation, got acquainted with the country’s alpine potential and opportunities on the ground, and the International Ski Federation (FIS) positively assessed the Georgian Government’s steps taken toward developing alpine resorts and winter sports in the country.

Before making a final decision, the FIS Group of Experts visited the country several times in order to inspect relevant infrastructure for the World Championship.
The Mountain Resorts Development Company of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development, Ministry of Culture and Sport of Georgia and Georgian Ski Federation were actively involved in the process.

“Hosting the 2023 Freestyle Ski and Snowboard World Championships in Georgia’s ski resorts Bakuriani and Gudauri is a most important athletic event that will play a vital role in the development of winter sports, promote healthy lifestyle, and help to upgrade the infrastructure in accordance with international standards. Moreover, hosting the World Championship will further enhance the country’s visibility and boost tourist interest in Georgia’s alpine resort,” reads the information released by the Georgian Government Administration.
Bakuriani is situated under the shadows of the breathtaking Caucasus Mountains

Bakuriani, one of the most popular winter sports and recreation destinations in Georgia, is located in Borjomi Region, 1700 m above sea level on the northern slope of Trialeti Range, 180 km to the north of the capital Tbilisi. The resort was originally developed as an Olympic training facility. Nowadays, many international athletes come here to practice their skills.

As long as winter season is lengthy (from December to March ) and the area is quite snowy, the resort is a real paradise for skiers and snowboarders. The area is graced with rich spruce-fir a forest that filters the air and serves as lungs for the nature.

Bakuriani is situated under the shadows of the breathtaking Caucasus Mountains, only a three-hour drive from Tbilisi. It offers some of the most spectacular skiing and snowboarding area in Europe.
The season in Gudauri begins in December and lasts until the end of April

As for Gudauri, it is one of the first and most popular winter resorts throughout Georgia. The ski resort is situated in Stepantsminda District, along the Georgian Military Highway, at the elevation of 2200 m above sea level. The resort is notable for its vast terrains without a single tree, that are ideal for free riders and heli-ski enthusiasts.

The season in Gudauri begins in December and lasts until the end of April. Most importantly the resort is only in two-hours’ drive from Tbilisi.

The highest point of the resort is Mount Sadzele - 3307 m above the sea level.
