Shameful Dance
It is not a revelation to anyone that in occupied France during WWII, the Vichy government was installed to cooperate with Germans. By the time WWII was over, France emerged as a victorious fighter against the occupying forces, the Resistance being its chief saving grace. But it is important to remember that while there were those few who fought for hum
anity in the face of atrocities, committed against it, there were also those who considered the occupied forces to be a great tool for getting rid of everything that was wrong with France in their eyes. A well recognized painter, while in Marseille, was overcome by disgust when at a restaurant he heard young French students singing German songs. He walked out of the building yelling to the singers to bow their heads and sing the songs of slaves for that was who they had turned France into.
There are those in Georgia who believe that Russian occupying forces are there in their legal capacity. They believe that Russian government reacts like an abusive partner only to the people it does not like, such as the president. These people want to believe that once the president is someone more suitable to the Russian needs, the great and powerful Russia will bestow its mercy on Georgia and give back the occupied lands. Just like there were people in France who thought it best they were occupied by the Nazis, there are people who consider it best to have a firm boot of Russia to keep Georgia in place. These are collaborators. They will say that an association of Russian government with Nazi Germany to be too strong, but I don’t think so. Yes, there are no concentration camps in Russia anymore; they simply kill those who don’t suit them (journalists, human rights advocates) on streets in broad daylight. They do not have an official stance on getting rid of people from Caucasus, except that during 2008 war, they rounded up as many Georgians and sent them on a cargo plane back to Georgia like cattle. Here is the kicker though – they picked up their own citizens from Georgia on the same cargo plane and delivered them back to Moscow like cattle. A government that cares for their people like they do for their unwanted cattle is not going to treat anyone else any better. Since 2008 the ‘white power’ in Russia has been killing people from Caucuses in the streets, yet very little has been done to stop the violence against such races. The reason for all of this is that, like Nazi Germany, Russia considers human life expandable. What happens when an American citizen is taken hostage? American government retaliates with full force so strongly that the rest of the world feels it. What happens when a full theater of Russian citizens gets taken hostage? The Russian government gives signal to kill everyone, including hostages if they cannot get out on their own. Russia is not a country that is historically known to care, or to fight for justice. In WWII they were literally forced to come out on the right side of the battle, but not before they joined the Nazis and signed a peace pact with them effectively. Saying yes, we agree with your ideas of mass murder and annihilation of human races; we wish we had thought of it ourselves first.
How can anyone go to this occupying force that is forcing a submission, much like Nazi government forced France, and dance for them? If half of France thought it was a good idea to collaborate rather than stand up a regime they themselves helped make by standing idly by being afraid to intervene in the rise of Hitler, then why can’t a Georgian dance company perform for the occupiers?
This isn’t a scare tactic, for if the Georgian population is still not afraid of what Russia will do, such as closing the market for wine, as it has done before when it is displeased, or simply invade as it has done before, then there is no point in even trying to warn. One can only hope that there is a population who still remembers what it is like to live in a free country, a country that is not being sold down the river by its own ministers who demand the restriction on word occupiers. If this population still exists, then perhaps half of Georgia will not have to face the shame of having collaborated with its own occupiers like half of France did. If Georgia still exists, that is.
