Loyalty
I can’t help it, I keep saying I’ll stop watching My Wife’s Girlfriends, and yet, every weekend, I somehow find myself sucked back in. I liked the show in the beginning, it was different, somewhat realistic, well written, superbly acted and very different from the shows I had seen before on Georgian television.
It felt progressive in a sense, the women were the focal point of the series and the writers had created very clear strong characters that resonated with
everyone in Georgia. I don’t mean that the characters were created as strong people in moral or physical sense, but that they were very clearly defined as certain types. They are typical polar opposites Kato (whose self love has no bounds) and Tina (who considers helping the disadvantaged her life’s mission) and in the middle there is Nina, a young wife and mother who stays at home. Nina is someone with whom, if you read the Facebook commentaries, most women in Georgian identify. The other characters are typical too, cheating husband, ‘old boys crew’, overstepping mother in law, talented musician and poet, drunken stepfather, gossiping coworkers and so on. There are plenty of types, enough for everyone in the country. Yet, the beauty of the show was that it let characters who seemed to be unattractive at first, for example Tina’s step father who was a drunk but sobered up enough to be worthy of Tina’s mother, have a second chance. And then someone who looked interesting for a week or tow turns out to be a stalker or a cheater. Things as they do in real life happen, and this is why the show was so good. And then came the biggest cheating scandal of the season. Nina, the doting beautiful young mother and wife was cheated on by her middle aged, bolding and out of shape husband. There must be a shortage of men in Georgian because believe it or not, that is a real scenario. It wasn’t that he fell in love with someone else, told his wife, got a divorce, and married his new love, no - he just wanted to have sex with a different body. As his character says, ‘heart wants what the heart wants’, except he probably meant another part of his anatomy but just wasn’t able to say it on national TV. The whole scandal died down pretty quickly as Nina was bought out by one bouquet of flowers and a basket of perfumes or some other toiletries that she should have already had anyway. What was left of the scandal, was the other woman who got labeled a whore and sent to a monastery, quite unfair as she was single, and he was married, but this is Georgian society after all - we haven’t come that far from good old days when everything was women’s fault. Husband cheats on wife, must be wife who did something wrong to make him cheat. Man beats a woman and she must have said something to set him off. And all of these excuses are perpetrated by the women who are supposed to stand up for their sisterhood, and instead they treat each other as a competition. There is a good example of this exact beating scenario in the show right now, all the neighbors side with the husband ‘ why should he want to beat his wife?’ is their logic. Reminds me of the current PM’s logic as he wonders ‘just why would Russia want Georgia’s land?’ to justify his belief that we can all be one big happy country. Seriously? Are we practicing selective memory game with regards to the history of two countries or is this another April fools joke gone on for way too long? If so, someone should tell my blood pressure to normalize. There’s enough with antifeminists for me to get worked up over, thanks for that ladies. Commentaries on Tina’s refusal to marry yet another completely unsuited suitor, were nasty and in a region of her being a whore and that it’s time to get married because it’s just not worth living if you are unmarried.  Apparently Georgian women consider anything with a member between their legs to be superiors to them and therefore worthy of settling for. The sad thing is that they teach their daughters and sons that cheating is just a part of life and by teaching them such a lesson all they do is perpetuate a myth that men are animals therefore one should not ask for them to respect the women around them, and that women are stupid enough to believe anything. Provided you buy them a bouquet of flowers and perfume every time you do something seriously wrong. I say every time, because once a person cheats and figures out it’s okay, then there is no reason for his ‘heart’ to want ‘what it wants whenever it wants’ again and again and again. So loyalty, the one we pride ourselves with, to whom exactly does it apply to? To Country? In recent political developments that seems to be debatable. To people we claim to love? Not according to the show and that is depressing. So here we go, my ticket out of the fan club. So long and may peace be with you.
